Diigo
Diigo is an excellent resource when doing research. Rather than keep piles and piles of articles in a binder, Diigo allows for students and educators to keep their resources in one convenient place- the internet! This digital filing cabinet will allow for students to be more organized with their research and work.
Diigo allows for students to complete research if they are writing a research paper for school, completing a science fair project, or investigating something that gives them deep interest. The more I think about it, this site may help my students when they begin their Social Justice unit in school. A curricular goal for the students is to choose a topic that they feel invested in and then write a short argumentative essay. By using Diigo, my students can easily access resources, (articles, journals, websites, etc), to use in those essays. My only real wondering is whether or not they would find this accessible. It took me a bit of time to get used to "Bookmarking" the article and then "tagging" the article, but because my students are Digital Natives, I actually think it would be easier for them. I think this site would be a huge benefit to my more disorganized students. Those exploding giant binders could be emptied, allowing for students to feel more relaxed and prepared for class.
I also would LOVE to see my students use Diigo as a "card catalog". When they complete their independent reading assignments, students can create a Diigo, summarizing the text, giving a recommendation, and then tagging key words, (i.e. survival, romance, horror, friendship). This would create an interactive card catalog, made FOR and BY the students.
